Industrial lighting is a key part of any manufacturing or production facility. It’s not just about safety and productivity but also energy consumption and operational costs. One of the key factors in industrial lighting is the voltage used. This article will explore the standard industrial lighting voltage and all its aspects and implications.
Voltage is a fundamental parameter in electrical systems, it’s the amount of electrical potential available to power devices. In industrial lighting, voltage affects the brightness, efficiency and lifespan of the lighting fixtures. Unlike residential lighting which uses 120V or 240V, industrial lighting standards can vary greatly depending on the region, facility size and application requirements.
120V and 240V Systems
In North America, industrial lighting uses 120V and 240V systems just like residential. But these voltages are more common in smaller facilities or areas where industrial activity is not as intense. These voltages are good for many types of industrial lighting including LED and fluorescent fixtures.
277V Systems
One of the most common voltage for industrial lighting in the US is 277V. This voltage is derived from a 480Y/277V three phase system which is common in commercial and industrial applications. The advantage of using 277V is that it allows lower current for the same power consumption, lower wiring cost and higher efficiency.
347V Systems
In Canada, 347V is the standard voltage for industrial lighting. Like the 277V system in the US, 347V is derived from a 600Y/347V three phase system. This higher voltage is good for large scale industrial facilities, for efficient power distribution and reduced losses in the electrical system.
High Voltage Systems (480V and Above)
For very large industrial operations or specific high intensity lighting applications, the voltage can go up to 480V or even higher. These high voltage systems are less common but are necessary for certain applications where lots of power is required over long distances, such as large warehouses or outdoor industrial complexes.
